Exploring Whadjuk Country: A Journey into Noongar Culture

Author: Yvette Gillam

Imagine stepping onto the northern beach at Point Peron, a place known as Boya Kaarla, where the untouched beauty of the Indian Ocean unfolds before your eyes. As the sun bathes everything in its golden light, you gaze out at Garden Island (Meeandip) and Rottnest Island (Wadjemup) to the northwest, while the picturesque Rockingham Foreshore stretches to your right. This is where our journey began, a journey into the heart of Noongar culture.

Our guide, Steven from In Culture Tours, welcomed us to Whadjuk country with a traditional Welcome to Country ceremony. It was a powerful moment, one that acknowledged the profound connection the Noongar people have with this land, a connection that has endured through generations and stands as a testament to the resilience of Indigenous cultures.
